HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE
Hampshire is an innovative private coeducational liberal arts college located in western Massachusetts.
Students earn the Bachelor of Arts degree by successfully completing individualized programs of study.
Hampshire attracts students from across the United States and from around the world. In recent years
students have come from Afghanistan, Australia, Bhutan, Brazil, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic,
England, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, India, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan,
Palestine, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Tibet, Turkey, and Vietnam.
Academics
Hampshire’s academic program is unique within the United States (and the world) for the amount of freedom and challenge it provides to
self-motivated students. Working closely with faculty mentors, students create individualized and rigorous programs of study designed to
accommodate their most passionate interests and concerns, and receive meaningful narrative evaluations of their academic work instead
of traditional letter grades. Students take advantage of Hampshire’s flexible curriculum by pursuing independent projects, internships, study
abroad and field study. Hampshire empowers students to take responsibility for their education resources, meet high standards, and produce a
significant independent project which occupies most of the final year of study.
Hampshire faculty members are organized into five interdisciplinary Schools: Cognitive Science; Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies;
Interdisciplinary Arts; Natural Science; and Critical Social Inquiry. There are no academic departments. Students and faculty members work
freely within and across Schools. As a member of the Five College consortium, Hampshire makes available to its 1,400 students a choice of over
5,000 courses per year taught by more than 2,000 faculty members, access to 9 million library volumes, and free bus service between the five
colleges and the towns of Amherst, Northampton, and South Hadley, Massachusetts. In addition to Hampshire, the other members of the Five
College consortium include Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
Student Life
Hampshire is a residential college. International students can expect campus housing provided for their undergraduate study. The Lebrón-Wiggins-
Pran Cultural Center provides support and a “home away from home” to students of color and international students at Hampshire. Additionally,
the Center’s director is the international student advisor assisting with U.S. immigration and employment regulations as well with cross-cultural
concerns, work authorization, tax information, state ID/licenses, consular and embassy information and much more. Students form more
than 100 cultural, athletic, and social service groups each year, including an active international students’ organization. Intellectual diversity
is a special hallmark of Hampshire. Because each student formulates an individual program of study, intellectual engagement falls across an
unusually wide spectrum of topics. Interaction with students from the other four consortium colleges further expands social and cultural options.
Alumni Achievements
Hampshire’s more than 10,000 graduates include an impressive number of entrepreneurs, as well as doctors, lawyers, educators, artists and
public servants. Sixty five percent of alumni earn advanced degrees within ten years of graduating and Hampshire is in the top one percent of all
colleges and universities nationwide in the percentage of graduates who earn doctorates. Forbes magazine recently named Hampshire one of the
top 20 U.S. colleges for entrepreneurs. Alumni commonly credit Hampshire with providing confidence to take risks, the ability to think critically
and independently, and the willingness and ability to work with others to make a positive difference in the world.

Financial Aid
Hampshire offers need-based and merit-based financial assistance to international students. Need-based scholarships typically meet from one-
quarter to three-quarters of the tuition charge. Room, board, books, transportation, and personal expenses are not covered. Typically a student
must meet expenses of at least $25,000 per academic year. All students receiving need-based aid awards from Hampshire are offered an
opportunity to meet part of their portion of expenses through a campus job. Campus job earnings are normally up to $2,600 per year. Students
and their families must carefully plan how they will meet their portion of the expenses for the four years of attendance as reconsideration of
financial aid due to changing family circumstances is not possible.
To apply for financial aid, international applicants and their parents must complete and submit all of the following:
