About this document
This document presents a survey of 70 colleges and universities across the United States
of America that offer need- and/or merit-based scholarships to undergraduate
international students. The list of institutions included is not comprehensive; it is meant to
represent a diverse list of large, small, private and public institutions that can serve as a
starting point for students as they explore scholarship opportunities.
Listed in alphabetical order, each entry includes basic profile information about the
institution, information related to acceptance rates and standardized testing
requirements, and information of available grants and scholarships. The scholarship
information is subject to change, and students are highly encouraged to review or request
additional information from institutions of interest. In January 2021, the College Board
announced it will discontinue SAT subject tests.

UA merit scholarships are open to all students and international students
have the same opportunity to compete just as their domestic counterparts.
International incoming first time freshmen who meet the December 15
scholarship priority deadline, have a qualifying score on the ACT or SAT and
have at least a 3.5 cumulative high school GPA are eligible for the following
merit-based scholarships: Capstone, Collegiate, Foundation in Excellence, UA
Scholar and Presidential ranging from $6,000-$26,000 per year. These
scholarships are awarded automatically based on an applicant’s GPA and test
scores. Students who submit a scholarship application and all required
supporting documents by the deadline may also be eligible for limited
university and departmental scholarships.
International students are also eligible for the Academic Elite Scholarships (8
academic elite scholars are named each year), which are awarded for 4 years.

Several academic scholarships are available to incoming freshman
international students including the Chancellor’s Community Scholarship, the
Silas Hunt Scholarship, the Honors College Academy Scholarship, the Razorback
Bridge Scholarship, and the Leadership Scholarship. Scholarships are highly
competitive and most are only available to students planning to enter the
University in the fall semester.

Caltech has need-sensitive admission for international citizens. The total
amount of financial aid funds is limited for international students, and the
Institute remains committed to meeting 100% of the demonstrated need of
all admitted students. This limitation may result in financial need being a
factor in the admission decisions. Please note that: (a) An international citizen
who plans to apply for financial aid at any time during their undergraduate
career must apply for it at the time that they apply for admission. (b) An
international citizen who applies for aid and is offered financial assistance for
the first year will be eligible to reapply for financial aid. (b) An international
citizen who applies as a freshman applicant through the Early Action plan
should not expect financial aid.

Chapman offers limited need-based aid (up to $15,000 per year) for
international applicants.
Merit-based
International students are eligible for merit-based scholarships during the
admission process. First year applicants are eligible for merit-based
scholarships up to $32,000 per year. Merit-based scholarships are based
primarily on a student’s grades and test scores, although there are a number
of additional factors that are also considered. Additionally, department
scholarships are awarded by major.

CMC is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated need of all admitted
first-year students, regardless of citizenship. However, as a "need aware"
institution, CMC takes into account a student's ability to pay the full-cost of
attendance as a part of admission criteria for applicants that are not U.S.
citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents.
Any student that needs financial assistance to cover the full-cost of
attendance must indicate that they are applying for need-based financial aid
on their admission application and follow the financial aid application
procedures for international students. Students who do not apply for or do
not receive financial aid upon admission are not eligible to be considered for
financial aid in future years while enrolled at CMC.

Merit-based
Merit-based scholarships are available for first-year applicants including the
Interdisciplinary Science Scholarship; the McKenna Scholarship; the Seaver

Financial assistance for international applicants is limited and is only
awarded at the time of admission. Your aid offer will be renewed each year

for up to 8 semesters as long as you enroll full time and make satisfactory
academic progress toward your degree. Financial aid is not re-evaluated for
international students. The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE is required for
international students who wish to be considered for financial aid.
Merit-based
International first-year applicants are eligible for merit-based scholarships
ranging from $10,000 to $27,000 annually, and the highest award is the
James E. Scripps Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to applicants whose
strong academic performance and school or community involvement indicate
that they will add vitality and intellectual value to campus. Scripps does not
require an earlier deadline for scholarship consideration. Merit scholarships
are only available to first-year applicants.

Pomona does offer financial aid to approximately half of the admitted
international students each year. International students can request
reimbursement for one trip home during their four years, excepting a trip
home after graduating.
Merit-based
Pomona does not provide financial assistance in the form of athletic or
merit scholarships.
Internships
International students can participate in the internship programs sponsored
by Pomona’s Career Development Office, which offers students access to
both part-time internships in the Los Angeles area during the school year and
summer internships in the U.S. and abroad. International students are eligible
for the same stipends and funding opportunities for these internships as
domestic students. In addition, international students are also eligible to
apply for Pomona’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program, which
provides funding for extended summer research projects with faculty on or
off campus.

The University of San Diego offers merit scholarships to international first-
year applicants. Scholarships are awarded based upon superior academic
performance in the following areas: grades, class selection and test scores.
Merit scholarships range from $18,000 to $25,000 and are renewable for
four years by meeting minimum grade point average requirements. Merit
scholarships are offered to first-year applicants only.
Depending on a student’s area of study, individual departments may offer
scholarships to international students.
International students are also eligible for athletic scholarships.

The University of the Pacific offers a number of $15,000 International
Student Merit Scholarships to international students applying as freshman or
transfer students. International applicants with a 3.5 GPA or above will
automatically be considered upon submission of a complete undergraduate
application for admission. No separate application is required. The award of
$15,000 per year is renewable for four years of undergraduate study if the
student meets eligibility criteria.
Additionally, international students can apply to the Powell Scholars Program,
the university's premier academic merit award, which awards an annual
$43,000 scholarship plus funding for education abroad and research
opportunities. Through this program, up to 10 scholarships are awarded
annually by the university.

The International and John Greenleaf Whittier Merit Scholarships: Whittier
College annually awards a number of scholarships to students, including
those given on criteria of academic merit, international citizenship, year of
entry and other designations. The amount you may be eligible for is based on
the Office of Admissions criteria and typically remains the same each year.
Campus Jobs
International students are eligible for jobs on campus through institutional
work-study program (if funds are available). International students are legally
restricted from working off-campus, except when it is an internship related to
their major.

When you submit your application to DU, you will automatically be
considered for merit scholarships. There is no additional application to fill
out. Most of these scholarships are renewable; please note that none of them
will cover the full cost of a DU education (with rare exceptions).
The following primary types of merit scholarships are available to
international students:
● $10,000 to $31,000 per year for first year students
● Music Activity Scholarship: To be eligible, you must submit an
audition to the Lamont School of Music.
● Athletic Activity Grant: Applicants who plan to participate in NCAA
athletics can be considered for these scholarships.
After nine months of enrollment, students may apply through International
Student and Scholar Services for a permit to work off campus

Yale offers need-blind admissions and need-based financial aid to all
applicants, international and domestic. Yale admits undergraduate students
without regard to their ability to pay, and provides need-based financial aid
awards to all admitted students on the basis of individual needs assessments.
Financial aid awards for international students are created using a needs
analysis that takes into account the relative differences between the US
economy and the economy of students’ home countries.

International students will only receive an I-20 for their F-1 student visa
application after providing proof of funding that shows that they are able to
pay the full-time cost of attendance for one school year (including housing
and meals). This includes any scholarships received from Stetson University.
There are very limited need-based scholarships for international students.
Merit-based
These scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the high school record,
standardized testing and community service. These awards will cover eight
semesters or until undergraduate graduation. Eligibility for these awards is
decided by the admissions committee upon completion of your application.

Need-based
Emory University offers need-based financial aid awards to a small, select
group of international students. International students who apply for need-
based financial aid will be reviewed as a separate cohort. In the admission
process, the university is “need-aware” for international students. This means
that when reviewing international applications, Emory University takes into
account whether an applicant has requested financial assistance. As a result
of this need-aware approach, Emory’s admission rate for international
applicants requesting need-based financial aid is notably lower than the rate
of acceptance for those not requesting aid.

Merit-based
International applicants are encouraged to apply for merit-based
scholarships (including the Emory opportunity award; Liberal arts scholarships)
through the Emory University Scholar Programs. As part of these programs,
the university offers partial/full merit-based scholarships.

Need-based
Each year, a small group of first-year international students receive need-
based aid. These students must indicate on their admissions application that
they wish to be considered for this limited assistance program. The funding
for this program is very limited. Northwestern's acceptance rate for
international applicants requesting aid is less favorable than acceptance for
students not requesting aid. Only those who are selected to receive these
need-based awards as entering freshman will be eligible to apply for financial
aid in subsequent years. As with U.S. citizens, the international student and
his/her family will be expected to contribute to educational expenses to the
extent that they are able, and awards may be comprised of scholarships
and/or loans.
Merit-based
Does not offer academic/merit-based scholarships with the exception of a
very limited number of talent competition scholarships in music.

First year international students are eligible for need-based and merit-based
financial aid. In fact, if you apply for need-based aid, and we offer you
admission, we are committed to meeting 100% of your demonstrated
financial aid. For this reason, our process is need-sensitive. With a limited
amount of funds available for international students, we need to know if you
think you will need aid. If you think you may require aid at any time during the
four years of college, you must apply for financial aid at the same time you
submit an application for the College. If you do not apply for aid, there will
not be funds available after you are admitted.
Merit-based
International students are eligible for merit scholarships. We automatically
consider all applicants for merit scholarships. There is no separate application
or essay for merit scholarships. Merit scholarships can be partial-tuition
scholarships, single lump sum awards, and some are renewable each year.

University expects to enroll 20 to 25 international students whose full

Penn is need-aware for international applicants, non-citizens, and non-

family’s ability to pay does factor into admissions decisions. International

students through departmental scholarship funds. Upon your admission to
JMU, we recommend that you reach out to the department/program you will
be studying in and express your interest in receiving a scholarship.

West Virginia University strives to provide its students with an inclusive
educational experience. We are pleased to offer incoming, freshmen
international students the opportunity to receive academic scholarships.
Effective for incoming fall 2021 first-time freshmen, not all institutional
scholarships require test scores. For those that still require test scores, WVU
looks at your ACT and/or SAT scores for institutional scholarship
consideration, in addition to your GPA. Please note that for scholarships that
list GPA and test score requirements, both criteria must be met. The SAT
scores are based on the Evidence-Based Reading & Writing score plus Math

score. WVU also “Super Scores” for scholarship consideration, so be sure to
submit all scores from each section of the ACT or SAT if you take the test
more than once. We will calculate your “Super Score” using the highest
component/subscore from each section of the tests submitted to us. Please
note that super scores are obtained from multiple submissions of the ACT or
multiple submissions of the SAT - not a crossover of ACT and SAT.

Academic Scholarships range from $25,000 to $38,000 USD per year.

Ripon College academic scholarships are reviewed on a rolling basis following
acceptance to the College. The admission application, along with its
supporting documentation, is reviewed to determine eligibility for all
scholarships. The scholarship committee will begin consideration for an
academic scholarship for those students who have achieved academically and
have demonstrated leadership and service in their high school communities.
