How to make the mask.
Inspired by the traditional African folktale ‘Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky’. Originally told by the
Efik people of South-Eastern Nigeria, Africa.
1. Cut out the templates provided (see photograph 1).
2. The paper plate: using the mask guide provided (Template 1), centre the guide over the paper plate.
Draw the eyes onto the paper plate. Cut out the eye area on the paper plate. Use the hole puncher to
pierce two small holes on each side of the paper plate. String the mask (see photograph 2).
3.The sun rays [10 pieces] (Template 2): either stick the sun ray shapes onto craft card and cut them out.
Or draw the outline of the shape 10 times onto craft card. Cut out the shapes.
4. Score over the dashed lines and fold the centre using a ruler. Fold the side flaps under and glue together
to create a 3D diamond shape (see photographs 3, 4, 5).
5. Once dry, further glue the flap and attach around the paper plate, use paper clips or clothes pegs to
maintain hold until dry (See photographs 6, 7).
6. Paint the mask, using brown and gold paint (see photograph 8).
7. The Moon (Template 3): Draw the outline of the moon onto silver card. Cut out the shape, including the
eye area (see photograph 8). Glue, adjust and attach onto one side of the sun mask (see photograph 9).
8. Use gold sequins to decorate and complete the mask (see photograph 9).
Caution: Adult supervision will be required when using scissors, hole puncher, glue, string and
other craft materials. Small parts can be a choking hazard. Do not leave Children unattended during
