The Research Article Show and Tell Presentation
Erika Engstrom, Department of Communication Studies
Comprehension of
Original Research
Students make a 5-minute presentation
in class in which they present the
purpose, method, and results of an
academic research journal article of their
choice related to the course topic.
The article must be from a peer-reviewed
academic journal. Students choose three
possible academic journal articles and
make a final choice in collaboration with
the instructor.
Learning by
Teaching
This teaching practice addresses
comprehension of high-level material and
the communication of that material via
both written and oral modes.
Evidence for the effectiveness of this
teaching practice includes the quality of
the article summary handouts produced
by students and oral
explanations of their
chosen article.
All handouts are judged by
a randomly chosen faculty
member for creativity and
clarity. The best handout is
recognized with an award at the
end of the semester.

A Pan-Disciplinary
Project
Instructors of any discipline can adopt this
practice in any course that addresses
theory, research design, and the range of
topics within or across disciplines that can
be examined systematically.
It serves as way for students to familiarize
themselves with original research that
they find interesting and to which
they can relate their own expertise and
life experiences. In addition, students'
handout content can serve as lecture
material for assessments.

Instructions and examples of
handouts are posted on
Student course evaluation comments address how they
are able to use course material—to which they contribute--and
apply it to their everyday lives.
Students then create a one-page
handout for classmates which
summarizes the article's purpose,
findings, and research approach. The
handout must include both text and
graphics, such as photos or clip art.
