Welcome to the 2023 Famous Maroon Band!
Greetings, Members of the Famous Maroon Band:
Things are already busy, and plans are underway for the 2023-24 edition of the FMB.
We are pleased that you all will be joining us in our program. We are excited to be able
to continue many of the shared experiences and traditions of our program in
performances, rehearsals, and travel that are so important to us all. But before that
time, we hope that your summer plans will include time for rest and recharging for the
opportunities ahead in the upcoming academic year.
This newsletter contains lots of important information concerning your membership in our
band program. Please read it! We have included information about the pre-school
camp, the football season, and the projected performance dates for the academic
year.
Marching band is a class (MU 2511), as are all music ensembles. EVERYONE must be
registered for the class by July 1 to participate (returning members, too). If you have a
circumstance that prevents your registration by July 1, you must communicate with our
office directly prior to July 1, or you will not have a position in our program. Also, as a
reminder, everyone must attend band camp!
We have a very talented group of new students coming into our program and excellent
musicianship and leadership from our returning members. We think this is going to be a
great year for the Famous Maroon Band. In the days ahead, make time for rest and
relaxation, play your horn a little bit, seek to be inspired, and take care of the
preparation and details for the school year so that you can maximize your experience
at MSU and in the Famous Maroon Band. Please let us know how we can assist you as we
move toward the school year.
Have a great summer!

"First Day" Instructions for Members
Living on Campus
At this time, band registration by section will begin at
8:30 am, Sunday, August 6, at the band hall. MSU
Housing will also have a staggered check-in for all new
and returning band students living on campus that
morning.
It may be necessary for your parents, friends, etc. to
finish moving your things into your dorm while you
report to band for check-in. Rehearsals will begin in the
afternoon for new students.
Class/Lab Conflicts
Because we only rehearse 4-5 hours a week, it is important
that every member be present for every rehearsal. In recent
years, we have seen a surge in the number of class conflicts.
That significantly holds back the daily progress of the band.
While we do not expect you to build your schedule completely
around the band, we have to trust that everyone is making
every effort to avoid all class conflicts.
Permitted class conflicts must meet
all three of the following criteria:
- The class must be required in your major (not an elective)
- The class must have only one section offered
- You may not miss more than one hour of rehearsal per week
because of your class
If your conflict does not meet these criteria, please resolve the
conflict in your schedule before band camp. Jobs or regularly
scheduled meetings are not considered class conflicts and will
not be excused.
Instruments
We will provide piccolos, tenor saxophones, mellophones,
baritones, and sousaphones. All wind players must provide
their own mouthpieces. Students with a personally-owned
instrument that requires a lyre must provide their own (except
piccolos and trombones).
Digital Flip Folders
Two years ago, the FMB moved into the digital age with our
music distribution--no more bulky paper flip folders. Instead,
you will use your smart phone along with the FlipFolder app to
access music digitally, and your phone will be attached to a
special "uniclip" that will hold your phone securely. If your
personally-owned instrument normally uses a lyre, you will still
need one for the season (except piccolos and trombones), so
please purchase one this summer. We also recommend that
you purchase a portable battery charger for your device
(typically less than $20) so that you’ll have enough battery life
for late afternoon rehearsals and gamedays.
Rehearsal Attire
For all rehearsals, please wear a t-shirt, shorts, socks, and
athletic shoes. Please do not wear flip flops, sandals, Chacos,
boots, high heels, dress shoes, hiking boots, etc. for marching.
Marching Uniform Shoes
The FMB uses black, matte finish marching band shoes. No
shiny finish or athletic shoes are allowed. If you already have the
correct type, you do not have to order new ones. If you need
new shoes, orders can be placed online with Southern
Performances. All orders placed this way will be delivered to the
band hall, which means you won’t have to pay shipping. We
strongly recommend that you order your shoes prior to band
camp. To order, simply visit the following website and use the
code MSSTATE2023 at checkout:
https://www.southernperformances.com/mississippi-state/
Fees
A band membership fee of $95 will be charged to your
university account to cover the purchase of a uniform dri-fit
supplement, summer uniform, t-shirt, ball cap, dry cleaning of
the uniform three times during the season, and some meals
at band camp. Students using school-owned instruments will
be charged $15 for maintenance.
Summer Uniform
NEW members will be issued their summer uniform during
band camp. Returning members will be expected to use
their uniform from last year (Maroon polo, white dri-fit
shirt, black Adidas shorts, black compression shorts).
Find these items now - don't wait until band camp!
All students must provide white (or mostly white) athletic
shoes and ankle (short) white socks to wear with our summer
performance uniform.
Drumline
All percussionists will report to the band hall Tuesday, August
1 at 9:00 am. The percussion instructor, Dr. Baker, may be
contacted at [email protected]ate.edu with any questions
that you may have. Percussionists should reserve 4:30-6:00
pm each day for band. Section rehearsals will be on
Wednesday immediately after band for one hour.
Guard & Twirlers
All guard members and twirlers should reserve 4:00-6:00 pm
Monday through Friday for band rehearsal. Guard members
can contact Ms. Parker at [email protected] if there
are any questions.
***Dietary Needs***
The FMB will share many meals throughout the fall semester.
The band staff will do our best to accommodate dietary
restrictions, especially during band camp, but we cannot help
you if we do not know what your situation is beforehand.
If you have any dietary restrictions, please contact Mr.
Corhern at [email protected] by July 1 so that he can
plan accordingly.

The FMB has been the highlight of my college experience. It has given me
friends, roommates, and memories that I will love and cherish for the rest
of my life. Every band camp, rehearsal, game, parade, and trip have

Going to band practice and participating
in football games have become some of
the highlights of my week! No matter how
hard of a day or week I am having,
playing my instrument and marching to
fun tunes with my band family never fails
to brighten my mood. I've made a couple
of close friends, but I know that anyone in
the band would be happy to help me
with anything, whether that be Organic
Chemistry or figuring out where my next
set is. I cannot thank the FMB enough for
all of the amazing memories I have
created! Hail State!

Kappa Kappa Psi is a co-ed band service fraternity on campus. We serve the band program in a variety of ways, from working
registration tables to organizing the band hall. Outside of serving the band, we attend our own district and national conventions
focused on leadership, service, and brotherhood. Our chapter has experienced a lot of growth this past year and is looking forward
to celebrating our centennial this coming spring. Whether you are a returning or new member, we would love for you to join our
chapter; it is a great way to not only give back to the FMB, but also a chance to form a family like connection with fellow band
members. We are here to help you adjust to the band and to college life! If you are a freshman or a transfer member, we’d love for
you to reach out to us if you have any questions about marching band, classes, time management, or if you just want to make a
friend before you get to State! We want to get to know you and help you feel welcome! If you have any questions about ΚΚΨ or our
chapter (Epsilon) you can contact Tommy Ducey ([email protected]) or Ethan Heverly ([email protected]). Feel free to tweet
us or message us on social media. We look forward to a wonderful season in the FMB with you! Hail State!

The Epsilon Chi chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota would like to welcome the 2023 members of the Famous Maroon Band. We are
excited to have the opportunity to grow and develop as a sisterhood and to integrate new members into a healthy and positive
environment. If you are looking for an organization that will offer you support, encouragement, and a sisterhood based on the
common interest of music, then SAI is the organization for you. Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music fraternity formed to
“uphold the highest standards of music” and “to further the development of music in America and throughout the world.” We in
Epsilon Chi strive to provide continuous musical and educational resources to our members and the Starkville community. If you
are interested and want more information, you can find a sister in her letters during band camp or follow us on social media and
keep a look out for posts about our upcoming recruitment week. You can also email us at [email protected].

The Lambda Phi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha would like to say welcome to all of the new and returning members of the Famous
Maroon Band. For those that do not know, Phi Mu Alpha is a men’s social fraternity founded to advance music in America. Since
the chapter’s founding in 1963, Lambda Phi has seen numerous people cross through that come from a wide variety of majors and
backgrounds. Our philanthropy is centered around bringing music into our community. For example, we assist with the MSU music
programs and host and perform our ownconcerts on campus and within the Starkville community. Joining Phi Mu Alpha ismore
than service though. If you decide to join, you will be joining a diverse and welcoming brotherhood with the likes of people such as
John Philip Sousa and Fred Rogers. Phi Mu Alpha is not only a good way to meet new people but will also help create lifelong
friends and memories. During band camp, reach out to a brother in his letters or attend our information session if you want to
learn more. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via email ([email protected]), or you can message
us on social media! We will be posting recruitment events closer to band camp, so follow us to ensure that you don’t miss out!We
look forward to seeing all of you this upcoming semester! Hail State!
