Soft Touch Furniture: X-Style Table Base Assembly Instructions
Assemble the Base
1. Remove the nut from the threaded end of
the rod and set the nut aside.
2. Insert the threaded end of the rod through
the underside of the spider.
3. Push the rod through until the nut on the
non-threaded end of the rod ts snugly
between the locking points. This keeps the
rod from turning.
4. Place the carboard support or a loosely-
balled rag on the oor, and set the spider
and rod upright on top of the cardboard or
rag. This holds the rod in position against
the spider.
5. Adjust the rod so that it is sitting straight
in the spider.
6. Place the column over the rod so that it is
sitting on the spider. The end of the rod
should protrude about two inches beyond
the top of the column.

7. With the underside of the base plate facing
up, align the hole in the base plate with the
protruding rod and place the base plate over
the rod. The threaded rod should protrude
beyond the underside of the base plate.
8. Screw the nut onto the threads.
Recommended but not mandatory: Apply
a small amount of thread locker to the
threads to help prevent loosening of the
nut. Dierent brands of thread locker are
available; we recommend Loctite 242, which
can be found at most hardware stores.
9. Tighten the nut. We recommend using a
torque wrench set at 25 foot pounds. A
breaker bar can be used instead, but be
careful to not over-tighten the nut. Over-
tightening can pull the threads, and the nut
will not tighten.
Use a socket of the correct size for the nut.
The most common sizes are 11/16", 3/4", or
18mm, depending on the base.
Base is assembled.

Attach the Base to the Tabletop
10. Spread a clean blanket or towel on the oor.
11. Place the tabletop nished side down on
the blanket.
12. On the side of the tabletop facing up (the
underside), draw an X from corner to corner.
The center of the table is the center of the X.
13. Place the assembled base, spider-side
down, on the tabletop. Center the spider
on the tabletop.
14. Screw the spider onto the underside of the
tabletop. (Screws are not included. Screw
diameter will vary depending on tabletop
material and spider size; screw length will
vary depending on tabletop thickness. Be
sure to use screws of the proper length.)
15. Flip the table over so that the base is
sitting on the oor. (This requires two
people to do safely.)
Table is fully assembled.
